Looking over the main puzzle text, you will find specific phrases that stick out (all beginning with a synonym of the word cold). If you replace the "cold" synonym with the word cold and then find what the rest of the phrase means literally, you will get a common phrase that starts with the word cold (e.g. "cool solid legal tender" becomes "cold hard cash" because "cool" → "cold" and "solid legal tender" → "hard cash"). Also note that when the corrected phrases are substituted in for the original incorrect version, they make sense with the rest of the sentence.

As clued by the diagram included at the bottom of the puzzle, the extraction for the puzzle is done by taking the number of words in the original incorrect phrase (not including the cold word) to be the index number you should use on the fixed phrase (again without the word "cold").
