The correct placement of the strips is revealed by the letters A–H for the files and the numbers 1–8 for the ranks. Keeping a light square in the bottom right corner and interweaving the strips yields the position below.
Many of the squares have letters or numbers beneath them. In the physical puzzle, the easiest way to view these is to shine a flashlight from underneath the board. If White is to move, there is a forced checkmate in six moves, and the letters underneath the landing squares of each move spell out the solution to the puzzle. The optimal continuation, annotated with the letters underneath the squares, goes as follows:
